Betty and Basya: Selfless Shelter Dogs Who Change Lives
Mitch, one of our dedicated teammates, has an incredible story to share about two extraordinary dogs, Betty and Basya. These two inseparable companions are more than best friends – they’re like two halves of the same soul. Whether moving, eating, or simply living, they do it all together. But what truly sets them apart is their unparalleled instinct to care for others.
This became evident when Scarlett, a timid and emaciated dog, arrived at our shelter. While we kept Scarlett in the kitchen for close monitoring, Betty and Basya immediately stepped in to nurture her. Known for being protective of their food, the pair amazed us when they began sharing their meals with Scarlett.
No matter how hard Mitch tried to ensure each dog had their own portion, Betty and Basya refused to eat until Scarlett had her fill. Their unwavering devotion meant Mitch had to serve smaller portions, let them feed Scarlett, and later sneak them their own meals separately. With their love and care, Scarlett blossomed – gaining weight and confidence until she transformed into a happy, plump pup.
When Scarlett eventually found her forever home, Betty and Basya didn’t stop their selfless acts. They quickly turned their attention to Rosina, another shelter dog in need. The same cycle began again: nurturing, sharing, and ensuring she thrived.
To ensure the pair actually eat their own food, Mitch now has to feed them in a closed space to stop them from giving it all away. Even then, their soulful, reproachful eyes silently scold him for interfering in their acts of kindness.
Betty and Basya inspire us every single day, reminding us of the boundless, selfless love animals are capable of. They’ve touched countless hearts here at the shelter, and we’re beyond lucky to have them ❤️.
