8 Years of Rescue - Mickey’s Story of Survival and Hope

8 Years of Saving Lives – And We’re Just Getting Started 🐾💛

On March 18th, our organization will mark an important milestone – eight years of rescuing animals and giving them a second chance at life.

During the days leading up to this anniversary, we want to share some of the stories that remind us why this mission matters so deeply. Every rescue has a story. Some are heartbreaking, some are inspiring, and some end with the kind of happiness that makes every difficult moment worthwhile.

Today, we want to celebrate Mickey – because this year, he finally found his forever home.

Mickey now lives with a wonderful couple in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he has a safe home and a loving family. He even has a little sister – a sweet 10-year-old chihuahua named Luna who has welcomed him into the family.

But Mickey’s journey to this happy ending was anything but easy.

He came to us from Bakhmut, a city that was almost completely destroyed during the war. Before everything changed, Mickey had a home and a family. But one devastating missile strike took that life away in an instant.

Miraculously, Mickey survived.

When rescuers eventually found him, he had been hiding beneath the only thing still standing in the ruins – an old stove. Frightened and alone, he had somehow managed to survive the chaos around him.

Despite everything he had been through, Mickey still trusted people enough to ask for help.

When he arrived at our shelter, he was deeply scared and unsure of the world. But slowly, day by day, he began to heal. With patience, kindness, and care, Mickey learned that he was safe again.

During his time with us, he formed a very special bond with our director Mandy’s daughter. Every night, Mickey would curl up beside her and sleep peacefully, finally able to rest without fear.

When the day came for Mickey to leave for his new home, it was a moment filled with mixed emotions. There were many tears. Saying goodbye to a dog you have cared for so deeply is never easy.

But those tears were also filled with happiness.

Because now Mickey is exactly where he belongs – loved, protected, and surrounded by a family that will care for him forever.

Stories like Mickey’s remind us why we continue this work, even through war, uncertainty, and endless challenges. Every rescue matters. Every life saved matters.
