On February 6, war once again reached those who cannot run, hide, or understand what is happening.

A Russian strike hit a dog shelter in Zaporizhzhia – a place that existed solely to protect vulnerable, homeless animals. The explosion damaged the facility, injured a staff member, and turned a place of care into a scene of devastation.

The blast wave and shrapnel tore through the shelter where stray dogs were recovering, eating, sleeping, and finally feeling safe. In a matter of seconds, everything changed.

Eight innocent animals were killed.
More than twenty others were injured.

These were dogs who had already lost so much – abandoned, neglected, rescued from the streets — only to become victims of war once again. They had no warning, no shelter from the explosion, no way to escape.

In the aftermath of the strike, volunteers rushed in despite the danger. Right now, they are working around the clock, racing against time. Wounded dogs are being treated wherever possible. Debris is being cleared by hand. Every effort is focused on saving lives and preventing further loss.

This is the reality animal shelters across Ukraine are facing.
They are not military targets.
They pose no threat.
They exist only because compassion exists.

And yet, they are being destroyed.

Behind every number is a life. A dog who trusted humans again. A volunteer who stayed through air raids. A caregiver who refused to leave animals behind, even when their own safety was at risk.

The staff member who was injured was doing their job – caring for animals who had nowhere else to go.

Right now, this shelter urgently needs support. Medical treatment, supplies, repairs, and basic care for the surviving animals all require immediate funding. Without help, the consequences of this strike will continue long after the smoke has cleared.
